On October 20th I was honored to join several fellow members of Veterans for American Ideals in attending a dinner in Baltimore hosted by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community. We were invited to be part of a special moment as they welcomed their international leader, His Holiness Mirza Masroor Ahmad.

This past Saturday, on a beautiful fall morning in New Jersey, I along with my fellow students and faculty of Princeton University’s Student Veterans Alliance met with recently resettled refugees at Starbucks on Nassau Street. It was part of the ongoing SIV Sips program between Vets for American Ideals and Starbucks, through which veterans and refugees come together for coffee and conversation.

We have to recognize that there’s great power bestowed in the tremendous respect America has for its military and veteran community. It’s our responsibility to use that power to build bridges. I live in a hamlet in upstate New York, where I have the opportunity to become friendly with people whom I would never have the opportunity to interact with otherwise because I’m a veteran. I also think it’s critically important to speak up because if we don’t, people will put words in our mouth or speak behind our backs. We fought to protect our right to free speech, guaranteed by the Constitution, and should exercise those rights.

“It doesn’t really matter to me, and I don’t think it matters to Maytham, that I was born here and was in the U.S. military and that he was born in Iraq and was an ally and an interpreter, because we experienced the same thing, and that’s what matters,” says U.S. Army veteran Travis Weiner.

Last Tuesday seventeen years since the 9/11 attacks, about 150 people showed up to DC Improv for a night of storytelling.

Each year, September 11th remains a sorrowful commemoration of those we lost in the terrorist attacks in New York, Washington, D.C., and Pennsylvania. But it has also become a day of service.
