Mink HeadshotI joined Vets for American Ideals (VFAI) in February 2016 because I believe our generation of veterans needs a platform to advocate causes other than our own. There are plenty of VSO’s fighting for our benefits—and we are indebted to them for their efforts—but VFAI represents a cause of a higher order. It offers an opportunity to continue a life-long oath to selfless service, to leverage our persuasive voices as U.S.

Over 400 migrants, many of them asylum seekers from Somalia, drowned when their boat capsized in the sea between Libya and Italy—the deadliest shipwreck in a year. The forty survivors drifted at sea for three days without food or water before being rescued; they are now recovering in the care of UNHCR in Athens.

We were wowed by this piece from combat veteran Chase Millsap on the fight to gain refugee status for the Iraqi soldier who saved his life. Millsap beautifully articulates what we hear from many veterans about the terps and translators they worked so closely with: "He is a member of my family... His struggle is my struggle."

The Huffington Post shares the story of Mariela Shaker, a Syrian violinist who came to the United States as a student in 2013 to study music, and now uses her craft to advocate for peace and connect people from different backgrounds. She has performed at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., and spoken at the White House.
