This week the fight for our Afghan allies continues in Congress. In a bipartisan effort led by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-AZ), the Senate voted to instruct the conference committee on the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) to take up Senator Shaheen’s provision for the extension of the Afghan Special Immigrant Visa (SIV) program.

In a recent Miami Herald op-ed, two of the country’s most experienced and respected national security leaders made the case for American leadership in the world refugee crisis.

Over the July 4^th holiday, we saluted the men and women in uniform whose sacrifice make this country great, including our Afghan allies, many of whom face life-threatening danger for their service.

As the world reels from Sunday’s Brexit vote, many fear that the United Kingdom’s departure from the European Union will give license to xenophobic sentiment.

From coast to coast on Monday, World Refugee Day, veterans and refugees came together to discuss the need for U.S. leadership on the refugee crisis and what America represents to them.

We found a lot of common ground. Aseel, a refugee now living in Boston, explained: “Veterans and refugees have all had experiences that change who you are as a human being.”

Our hearts are with all those affected by the tragedy in Orlando over the weekend. The shooting, which killed 49 and wounded 53, is the deadliest terrorist attack on U.S.
