Washington, D.C. — In response to today’s Supreme Court decision lifting injunctions that will allow the Trump Administration’s policy banning certain transgender people from the military to go into effect, Scott Cooper, founder of Veterans for American Ideals issued the following statement:

The military is built on a culture of honor and respect for all. We made no distinctions based on where someone came from, whom they chose to love, or their gender identity. If you can meet the standards, you should have the opportunity to serve.

Furthermore, leaders from every branch have testified that transgender service members have not harmed the military’s readiness or effectiveness. We disagree with this restriction and hope that federal courts considering this issue will rule to protect equality for every person with the heart to serve.

Cooper is also National Security Outreach Director at Human Rights First and a retired Lieutenant Colonel in the Marine Corps. He served five tours in Iraq, two in Afghanistan, one in Europe, and one in the Western Pacific.
